5 Tips- Filming For Beginners

Updated: Apr 26, 2022

Tip 1

The most important thing for you to know whether its photography, drawing, painting or making movies is that you don't need expensive equipment to make amazing art. For making movies all you need is a phone you don't need a fancy camera. Making CGI art or animations you don't need a $1000 software you can just use a free software like "Blender". In my opinion "Blender" is better. But any the point is don't let money hold you back from becoming an amazing film-maker.

I have a post with a list of all the free things I currently know about. Many of them are open-source so they don't have adds or hidden subscriptions. Some of these are "Blender" (3D software and video editor) and "DaVinci Resolve" (Advanced Video editor) If you want to check that out I'll try to get a link under this.

You don't even have to have a computer, you can just use your phone. I have another post talking about all the free apps that are good for making films. Some examples are "VITA" (Video editing Software) and "Audio Recorder" (Records audio).

Tip 2

Edit your video to be as short as possible. But wait what make it shorter? But people like long Films right? Nope people want something short with lots of action and story. It can be hard to get rid of videos you worked hard to make but if it doesn't work with the story or just adds unnecessary information that just makes the film drag on then get rid of it. When it doubt cut it out.

Tip 3

Tip 3 is to always have a plan for what your going to film. If you just take your phone or camera and just make up a story as you go it probably won't make much sense and it will be harder to know what to do. It's a lot easier to film something when you have a plan. When I first started I just went out and filmed without a plan and I ended up not finishing them or they didn't really make sense or really have a story.

Learning how to make a story for filming and photography has probably taken me the longest to learn. And let me say I still don't fully understand it. It takes time and practice to make good stories. It also takes practice to be creative. If your not very creative there are way's to help you be more creative. And that leads into the next tip.

Tip 4

Ok so to be more creative takes a lot of practice and trial and error but is very rewarding. The first step to becoming more creative is to do many art forms. For example, if your doing Film making it would be a good idea to learn photography. By doing this you can focus on composition, colors, color grading etc.

Another art form that would be good to do is creative writing. This might not seem like an art for because your not making an image, but it is because your creating an image in the readers mind. Creative writing is good to do because it helps with being able to tell better story's and to create scripts.

The Final art form I would suggest starting is drawing. Story boards help you to visualize what you'll be filming

Tip 5

The final tip is to just go out and make something. The best way to learn is to just go out a do it. If you learn about for filming for hours but don't actually go out and practice all of that is going to waste. From what you've read in these 5 tips you have enough knowledge to go out and make your own short film. It will probably be bad, my first film was really bad but I have improved since then.

Coming up with a story can be hard sometimes so making a music video can almost bi-pass all the complex story stuff. Music videos are always kind of random and you can do what ever you want for it.

To make a music video just pick a song that you like. You'll have to buy the song so you can download it either on iTunes or any other music store. There are websites with free music such as "Free Stock Music" but music from there don't have words. It's an amazing place to get free music for short films though. It is actually the best place I have found so far to get high quality and good free music. Just make sure that if you put the video on YouTube that you credit the music from "Free Stock Music"
